favorite movies
my favorite movie is Ghost dog: way of the samurai. this movie was released in 1999 and stars Forest Whitaker. its directed by Jim Jarmusch and has a soundtrack by hip-hop legend RZA. it follows the titular Ghost Dog, a samurai assassin in NYC/Jersey City, as he simultaneously works alongside and clashes with the Jersey City mafia. I assure you, whether this synopsis sound interesting or uninteresting, this movie is way better than you expect. it is quite arty but manages to still be dramatic and action packed. rather than explaining it further i encourage you to go watch this film right NOW. it is available on HBOMAX.
2. I had trouble choosing between this one and the next one for number 2 but i think this one is cinematically prettier (not to say the next one is not cinematically beautiful, quite the opposite.) The Suicide Squad (2021) is a DC superhero film directed by James Gunn. known for the guardians of the galaxy films. It is an indirect sequel to suicide squad (2016), a movie i have never seen and dont plan on seeing it because it looks bad. Suicide Squad 2021 is super colorful, fun and has the greatest action from any film in recent history. it follows a group of super-prisoners who go out and fight for the government in order to shorten their sentences. it follows a group of these prisoners as they go on an adventure to destroy the ominous "project starfish." the entire film (aside from the last 20 minutes or so) is very good. personally most of the jokes dont land for me but thats alright. the last thing i want to say about this film is that the Just a Giglio scene is one of my most favorite scenes in any film.
3. Oceans 11 (2001) is a heist film staring several people with the most famous recognizable being George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt. the jazz/funk soundtrack is amazing and the editing is astounding.
4. Puss in Boots: the Last Wish is a 2022 film by dreamworks. It is so beautiful, using a mix of water color and comic book styling similarly to spiderman into the spiderverse, 3D animation with a beautiful 2D style. the story is fun yet manages to be dark even in a kids film. my only problem is that theres this dog that is the most annoying character ever.
5. Snatch is a 2001 film that follows several stories that all connect by the end. it features amazing performances, editing and cinematography. would recommend.
favorite shows
smiling friends is an adult swim show created by animators/comedians Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack. i follows the wacky adventures of two silly critters named pim and charlie. these 11 minute episodes are the funniest episodes and most rewatchable episodes of any show ive ever seen. the first 2 episodes arent great in my opinion, with the first one prominently containing a side character who is mostly just a suicide joke, which i dont find all that funny, and the second one being the most popular to my understanding and surrounds the character mr frog who is a celebrity who was canceled for eating a tmz reporter. this premise sound a lot less funny as it is (my opinion) but its not a bad episode. the 3rd episode features shrimp, a character played by david firth, the artist behind salad fingers. the third one is a halloween special which in my opinion is the second worst one after desmond's big day out (ep.1.) episode 5 is one of the funniest i think, who violently murdered simon s salty? episode 6 is just okay in my opinion, enchanted forest. this episode is half parody or of the 70s cartoon LOTR films, half original story and then ends with a twist. episode 7 is my favorite: frowning friends. a bizarro version of the smiling friends move in across the street from the original ones and chaos ensues. episode 8 is just a fun christmas special and episode 9 is truly the greatest, most exiting and most interesting episode of any show ever.
2. Azumanga Daioh is an anime about a group of high school girls who are just kind of silly. this is the only show on this list that i have not watched all the way through, i have only seen around 10 or 11 of the 20 something episodes, so i will not be going through every episode. each episode usually has a character who they focus on more than the others. my favorite characters are Osaka, Sakaki and chiyo. jokes in the show are, in my opinion, very funny. the comedy are weirdly surrealist with awkward pauses or things that go on for a longer time than you expect. the entire show is on youtube so i recommend you watch it for yourself since its a bit hard to explain just in text alone.
3. Scott the Woz is a web series/tv show where a nerd talks about video games. The show started in 2017 on youtube by Scott Wozniak but was edited for television and aired on g4 when it was revived, but all the original episodes and new ones are still released on youtube to this day. Theres not a ton to say about it. most episodes are pretty low quality but it is made up for by the great jokes and well written scripts. all the specials are great and often feature impressive animation made just for these special episodes. if you like video games and video game history you will more than likely like this show.
4. Regular show is a cartoon network show featuring characters Mordecai, Rigby and several iconic side characters like Benson the gumball machine, muscle man, and skips (who is played by MARK HAMILL.) every episodes starts with a mundane problem that mordecai and rigby need to deal with and then they find mystical solutions that devolve into wacky and nonsensical events. its overall a lot of fun and very funny.
5. The Simpsons is perhaps the most well known cartoon ever made. it is (as of writing) 33 and a half seasons long but in my and the general opinion it has been kind of terrible for a very long time, with most people saying this started around season 9 but in my opinion it was not really bad until season 14 or so. my personal favorite season and what i believe is the generally most praised season is season 8 and my favorite episode is Homer's Phobia.
favorite musicians and bands
My favorite musician of all time is rapper/producer MF DOOM. Daniel Dumile was born in England but moved to Queens at a very young age and grew up here with his brother Subroc. in 1991 KMD, Daniel and Subroc's rap group, released Mr. Hood, their debut album. in my opinion the album is just alright with the best songs being Mr. Hood at Piocallee Jewelry / Crackpot. This album was not super popular and just sort of went unnoticed aside from the song Peachfuzz which gained minor popularity. After this they began work on another KMD album; Black Bastards. But during this time Subroc tragically passed away in a car accident. Daniel was determined to finish the album but was soon dropped by their record label due to the offensive and dark nature of the album. this left Daniel with virtually nothing, borderline homeless until he managed to release another album under a new name: MF DOOM. this album was Operation: Doomsday, where you could clearly see DOOM's talent in musical production and reinstated his lyrical genius which was also put on display in the KMD albums. the biggest hit off this album was the song Doomsday featuring the still unidentified, Pebbles the Invisible Girl. My favorite songs off of this album are rhymes like dimes or I hear voices - pt.1 (although i prefer the slightly different version off The Downfall of Ibliys: a ghetto Opera by MF Grimm.) in the following years he, for the most part, just produced instrumentals which even with no raps over them are godly. this was until 2003 when the album Take Me to Your Leader by King Geedorah who is MF DOOM. King Geedorah is another character separate from MF DOOM. MF DOOM is only a character, a supervillain who doesn't really to have any end goal, based off Dr. Doom of fantastic 4 comics and cartoons. King Geedorah, as crazy as it sounds, is a 3 headed kaiju from another planet who produces rap music and telekinetically communicates with DOOM. the best song off take me to your leader is Fazers in my opinion. this album was not super important in the grand scheme of things and from what I can tell was never super popular. its far from my favorite DOOM album but still a great one. later in 2003 the album Vaudeville Villain was released under the moniker Viktor Vaughn. This is one of my favorite albums ever made but despite this fact it was not all that popular either. I recommend every song off this album. but the next album was undoubtedly the most important; Madvilliany. Produced by Madlib this album put DOOM on the map after almost 15 years. while not my favorite DOOM album i would say this is objectively his best. the lyrics are simply genius, the beats are lovely and this album is legendary. Later that year he released his most famous solo project, MM... FOOD. This album features DOOM's most popular song, rap snitch knishes, only rivaled by ALL CAPS of madvilliany. I love all the rap songs off this album but I'm not a huge fan of the songs that are exclusively instrumentals with various samples mixed throughout which make up almost half the album. in 2005 he featured on Gorillaz album Demon Days and then released the album The Mouse and The Mask, produced by Danger Mouse. This is my personal favorite album of all time and the craziest part about it is that IT WAS AN ADVERTISMENT. the best album ever made IS AN ADVERTISEMENT. it was created in promotion for adult swim, or more specifically the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie. in 2006 a second Viktor Vaughn album was released, VV:2 or Venomous Villian, which personally I really like but was considered so bad by everyone else that it is unavailable on all music streaming services. soon after this a collab album with Ghostface Killah was worked on but ended up being canceled. A remix of Madvilliany by Madlib was released titled Madvilliany 2: The Madlib Remixes which I like some of the remixes better than the originals but it's otherwise unimportant and generally just ignored. In 2009 the album BORN LIKE THIS was released. i have mixed feelings on this album and i rarely see it talked about. it has good songs like GAZILLION EAR and ANGELZ but other than that it's just mid. the only time this album is really spoken about is when addressing the song BATTY BOYZ. this song was blatantly homophobic but in a very joking way and unfaithful to the idea of homophobia, mainly just calling batman and robin gay. Daniel stated that it was just written to make DOOM seem more evil. this album was generally a lot darker than his other works. after this DOOM went on tour in England, where he was born. But he was not allowed back into the US, despite the fact he had lived there since he was literally a baby, because he never got a green card (which is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion.) So he was stuck in another country and separated from his wife and child and with time to kill he just kind of released a full album. Key to the Kuffs is not his best album but better than Take me to your Leader in my opinion, mostly because of the remixes of his best songs. There's not a ton to say about this album except for the fact that it contains DOOM's most impressive bar where he rhymes "Eyjafjallajökull", the name of an Icelandic volcano, with "vocal" on the song guv'nor, which also has his second best video after the strange ways video. Doom ended up staying in England with his family moving over and released a collaboration album with Bishop Nehru, a very young rapper only in his teens at the time, in 2014. this was the first time DOOM did more producing than rapping and in my opinion its just fine. better than Take me to your Leader, BORN LIKE THIS and Key to the Kuffs. in 2015 Black Bastards the unreleased KMD album was finally released soon followed up by a collab with Czarface. after this there was not much for a few years. there were rumors about a proper sequel to Madvilliany and a potential 3rd Viktor Vaughn album but nothing came of these. On december 31st 2020 DOOM's wife posted on Instagram that he had passed away on october 13st of that year at the age of 49 to causes that remain unknown to the public. in 2021 another Czarface collab that was recorded before his death released, Super What? which is really good. there is so much more to be said about DOOM that i have not said here so i recommend looking into him on your own. when listening to his music i recommend you listen to The Mouse and The Mask first and then Madvilliany and Vaudville Villian before going into everything else. RIP MF DOOM.
2. Gorillaz is a band started by Damon Albarn of Blur and Jamie Hewlett, the artist behind Tank Girl. The band does not fall into any single genre instead being a mix of almost all genres. It is a virtual band which means that the band members are cartoon characters rather than actual people. obviously actual people make the music and cartoons. The four main characters are Stuart Pot or 2D, a skinny blue haired singer and piano player from Britain who's eyes were damaged in an accident caused by the next member, Murdoc Faust Niccals, a green fellow also from Britain. it is unclear why he is green or if he is even human but he is aggressive and offensive yet charming and he plays the bass guitar. Noodle is the only band member who actually ages, being only around ten when the other members put an ad in the newspaper asking for a guitarist. Noodle then arrived in a big wooden crate around 11 seconds after this add was sent out and is still the bands guitarist since. Noodle is my favorite character from the Gorillaz universe, starting out as a superhuman created in a lab by a Japanese scientist and later becoming a sort of straight woman to the group after the events of plastic beach. The final member is Russel a drum player from Brooklyn who was possessed by the spirit of Del Tha Funkee Ghost rapper (it is unclear if this was his name before he died or if he was given this name after he became a ghost but either way he is played by Del Tha Funkee Homosapian) after watching him die in a drive by shooting. In contrast to Noodle he started as the straight man of the band but later became more wacky, but not quite as much as the other members. There is a lot more lore behind the band but rather than going into that im going to talk about the actual discography of the band. In 2001 they released their first album, the self titled Gorillaz. This is my personal favorite album featuring their first hit Clint Eastwood with Del Tha Funkee Ghost Rapper and several other great songs. the album is inconsistent with most songs being rather somber and then the 2 songs with Del and the other big hit 19-2000 being very upbeat but the entire album id pretty good in my opinion. after this a B-sides of this album was released under the name G-sides. this album features both demos of songs on the final album and completely new ones with the stand out track being The Sounder. after this in 2002 they released Laika come home with Space Monkeyz. This album only had 11 tracks and is very reggae-ish which I'm personally not a fan of. 3 years later they released what is objectively their most important and best album Demon Days. this album is in my opinion the best album ever released only rivaled by Madvilliany by MF DOOM and madlib. this album contains the song Dirty Harry, a collab with founding member of the pharcyde, Bootie Brown and what is without a doubt their most popular and acclaimed song, Feel Good Inc. with De La Soul. personally this album is not my favorite and i believe its best experienced when listened to on vinyl all the way through. this album was followed up by a B-sides album, D-sides which is just alright in my opinion. it has a few good songs, most importantly Rockit and the demo of Don't Get Lost in Heaven but is otherwise just not that great. 5 years later in 2010 the album The Fall released. this album is without a doubt the most forgettable gorillaz album despite it being unique and this is likely do to the fact that their masterpiece Plastic Beach released only about a month later. Plastic beach is a very special album with a more orchestral feel and every track being nothing like anything else ive heard. it has many great features including Bobby Womack, De La Soul, Lou Reed, Mos def and a ton more. unfortunately, due to creative differences between Damon and Jamie, the band split up soon after the release of this album. they were on hiatus for 7 years until 2018 when they suddenly returned with Humanz. Humanz is without a doubt their messiest and in my opinion their worst album. the concept of the album was "dance party at the end of the world" which is a great concept but is executed very poorly. the album was worked on durin the twilight of donald trumps presidency and that caused the album to be full of political commentary which i dont mind but then soon before release Damon removed all reference to trump for some reason. the album still has 3 good songs, those being Ascension with Vince Staples, Saturnz Barz with Popcaan and Out of body. i also like Momentz with De La Soul but its only alright. Damon decided that the album didnt have enough 2D in it and that it was Murdoc holding him back so they decided to arrest Murdoc and keep him in prison for the next album and replace him with Ace. Ace is a villain from the Power Puff Girls whos creator was friends with Jamie. The album that came out is The Now Now. it only has 10 songs and is thoughtful yet forgettable. The best sons on it are Humility (which hilariously features jack black in the music video) and Tranz. its more reminiscent of Damon's solo albums but is still really good. Next year in 2020 Song Machine Season 1: Strange Timez began releasing. they released 1 song of the main 10 song album every couple weeks through the year and realeased a handful more when the deluxe version released. This album is inconsistent in quality but overall pretty good. the best songs on it are without a doubt Momentary Bliss with Slowthai and Strange Timez with Robert Smith. They went on a world tour after this and during this time they also worked on their next album, Cracker Island, which is set to release next month (february 2023) as of writing. My favorite songs that have been released are Cracker Island with Thunder cat and Baby Queen. while song machine was great its nice to see a more stand alone project, even if its not my favorite.
3. Czarface is a group of 3, Inspectah deck of Wu-Tang fame, Esoteric and 7L. While being mostly hip-hop i would argue they don't really fall into a single genre with songs like Big em' Up being more a rock song than anything. They similarly to DOOM are very comic book inspired with loads of pop culture references in almost every song which some people may find annoying and a cant blame them all though i think its not really to annoying or bad. The lyrics themselves are pretty above average in my opinion but the instrumentals are phenomenal. on Every Hero Needs a Villain every song sounds like the soundtrack to an epic anime battle and makes me picture these amazingly choregraphed fight scenes especially on the song Lumberjack Match where i see a WWE style wrestling match between Czarface and a randy savage type character that evolves into elaborate fights between Czarface and a myriad of unique enemies. Even their worst albums have songs that give me vivid and fun scenes like on A Fistful of Peril with the song Two in the Chest. If MF DOOM is hip-hops supervillain then Czarface is hip-hops deadpool style anti-hero. their best album is their most recent, Czarmaggedon which has the most unique instrumentals I've ever heard and is generally a bit more somber than their other albums while still staying a lot of fun.
favorite games
Post Void is a headache inducing, disorienting, tedious game with little variety in combat and probably not worth its 3 dollar price tag but despite all this it is absolutely PHENOMONAL. This game features vibrant contrasting colors and randomly generated levels that continuously begin to be colored less harshly and also more confusing to navigate. there's no good way to explain this game without making it sound awful, so I'm not going to try, but this game is a masterpiece go play it, it is 100% worth your time
2. Team Fortress 2 was released in october 2007 by valve, the studio behind Half-Life, Portal and steam as a platform. Although i dont play much anymore i would be lying if i said this isn't the most important game to me and the game i have spent the most time playing rival only to minecraft or maybe fortnite. TF2 is a class based shooter featuring 9 unique and (mostly) well designed characters, the most recognizable being The Heavy, or The Scout. I would highly recommend this game especially since its free on steam and still manages to maintain a huge and passionate player base after nearly 16 year and over 5 years without a major update.
3. Similarly to TF2, Minecraft is a game i dont really play anymore but is undoubtedly very important to me. this is definitely the game i have spent the most time playing dedicating well over 200 hours to my last server alone. theres not to much that i can say about minecraft that you dont already know considering its literally the best selling game of all time.
4. Doom (2016) is kind of a reboot and also kind of a sequel to the original Doom series started in the 1990s. This game is the definition of badass. almost every weapon feels good to use especially the shotguns and glory kills. The absurd, over the top gore is a complete joy and the whole game is phenomenal. i imagine that this is what Jesus did when he went to hell in that one bible story. i have heard doom eternal is better but i have not played it yet
5. Garry's Mod is almost unfair to put on this list. Gmod is basically anything you want it to be. It is a sandbox game on steam which is built off the source engine and was even given permission to use models from TF2, Half-Life, CS and any other Valve game they wanted by Valve themselves. This game is so much fun and everyone has a different experience with it which makes it hard to explain why its so great. Its basically the best deal of all time since you can do nearly anything with this game that only causes 10 dollars.
